Chapter 1 What is the weather like in the dry parts of the Sahara? It can become very hot and dry, in the Sahara. In the summertime the average temperature, is normally above 70 degrees. In the "winter" it can get as low as 50 degrees. During the day the average person loses two to four gallons a day. From time to time in the Sahara it will get very dark this means that you are in a harmattan. A harmattan is a strong dry winds that blows sand and dust, thease normally happen in the winter. If you are ever caught in one of these you should cover your face, otherwise you will get sand in your eyes, mouth, and nose. Winds in these storms can reach up to 100 miles an hour.
How do you think a Tuareg's life might be different from that of someone who lives along the Nile? The Tuareg people live mostly in west Africa, you may have also heard of then know as blue people. They are known as blue people because the dye in their clothing will somtimes rub off on there skin and turn it blue. A Turegs life is differnt then someone who lives along the Nile becuase the Turegs have no fresh water rivers near them like the people living along the Nile.
In what ways do people react to environmental conditions in different areas of the Sahara? In what ways are people trying to control their environment? The farmers use irrigation to water crops. They plant trees, to reduce soil erosion. They buit dams and man made lakes to store water for the drier seasons. They are trying to control the flow of water, but controling the flow of water can lead to irrigation increases, and less fertile land.

Why do farmers use irrigation? Farmers use irrigation to water crops, and keep them alive. They use irrigaiton to water there crops because there isnt enough water to naturly water them.
How do dams affect farming? The water isnt aloud to flood the land and naturlly fertilize the crops and land. Without the water being abble to flood the land farmers have to use more chemical fertlizers, How is the land changing in the Sahel? The land in the Sahel is changing because of desertification, desertification is making productive land into a desert. Many people hope that they can reverse the process, for example the Niger people have planted trees to reduce soil erosion.

Chapter 2 Questions:
How is the savanna differnt from the Sahara? Describe its location.
The Sahara is much bigger then the Savanna, and the Savanna is located just south of the Sahara desert.

How do both herbivores and carnivores depend on the savanna?
Herbivores depend on the Savanna because they need the grass to eat and get fat and healthy, Carnivores depend on the Svanna to provide grass for the herbivores so they can eat the herbivoes so they can get fat and healthy.

Why are so many countries joining their national parks together?
Many countries are joining together because the animals are taking the fences down and traveling were ever they want.

How are national parks sometimes a problem for people of the savanna? In what ways do they help people of the savanna?
The national parks take up alot of the farming land that the farmers need for their crops, they then can travel from country to country without a problems.

How does sustainable development help people and animals in Kruger National Park in South Africa?
